Painted Skin (Hua Pi) - Thoughts & Questions

Painted Skin and Painted Skin II

If one single story

Here I will try to discuss both movies as they fit into one large story.  How they are many unanswered questions and why certain things may have happened.

First I will like to talk about Xiaowei's imprisonment.  In the beggining of Painted Skin: Resurrection the narrator tells us that Xiaowei was imprisonment for breaking demon law by saving the life of a human male.  This set's up the idea that someone forced Xiaowei to be where we see her in the frozen abyss inside the mountain, punishing her for a kind act. However, no where in Painted Skin or Resurrection are we told or shown that there are set of specific laws that demon have to abide by.  Xia Bing even says that there are good and bad demons. So in a way, a demon that kill and eat human and thoes that do not (assumption).   Also Xiaowei tells Jing'er that she loved a man, who loved her back but then did not leave his wife.  Xiaowei saves their lives but was punished for it.  Again we are told that an outside force or body placed a punishment on Xiaowei for just doing this act.  This also tells us that these humans (man and his wife) took advantage of an innocent Xiaowei.  Also that Xiaowei's kind act was completely selfless.  Since, we get no outside narrative or flashback all we have is what Xiaowei tells us. And since, it's been 500 years none of the people (humans atleast, and lizard demon who is gone) are there to backup or refute her view of things.

Xiaowei in Ice Prison being freed with Qu'er's help
If you saw Painted Skin however, you know that Xiaowei is the one that gave the poison to Peirong and most of the situation was instigated by her scheme to get hearts and to steal Sheng Wang and become Mrs. Wang. Peirong treated Xiaowei well and welcomed her and when Xiaowei confesses her love for Sheng.  Peirong was willing for Xiaowei to be with Sheng, if he wanted it.  Even when Sheng refused, Peirong saw that he was attracted to Xiaowei and took it on to herself to go tell Xiaowei that she should be Sheng's concubine.  Peirong even took on all the blame for the deaths and be hated by everyone even Sheng that she loved most. Saying that if Xiaowei would stop killing, would not hurt Sheng and stay to make him happy. In fact no demon law or rules is ever mentioned not by humans or the demons we see the films.

Xiaowei flying away from the mountain
At the end of Painted Skin Xiaowei is not punished by any outside force because she broke demon law by doing a kind act or for using magic to save a human. Xiaowei disappears when she uses her pearl to save all the people that died because of her. And from what I saw she did not want to save them all.  She just wanted to save Sheng but the energy from pearls (including Xiaoyi's) envoloped a large area. If Xiaowei had used just her pearl like she landed, she would have probably just saved Sheng (maybe some others) but not Peirong, who in a way died twice (Deadliest poison & stab wound).  This one kind act was not complete repairation or atonment for all the bad and killings she did.  So her ice prison seemed to me more like some karmic payback for all she had done.  Also the first time we see the frost is when Sheng stabs Xiaowei when Peirong died. Xiaowei seems quite hurt that Sheng was still thinking of Peirong even though he thought she was a demon, she screams, her skin turns quite and cool vapor escapes her lips.  So, her we see that no one did this but Xiaowei herself.

Xiaowei

Xiaowei's true form (without painted skin)
Another times when we see the ice prison is when Xiaowei is playing her pipa (chinese lute) to seduce the masked Jing'er. the frost appears from a drop of water on a leaf and starts to crawl towards Xiaowei. No one created it and sent it after her, no one is really judging Xiaowei for the things she does.  To me the frost seemed to be created by Xiaowei herself.  On normal general circumstances a person has a conscience which makes them feel guilt, shame and pain (among others). When they hurt someone this consciene makes them feel remorse and even stop them from doing it and have them atone for the wrong they have done.  To me his frost/ice prison seemed to be a manifestation of a conscience for a demon. And in this case since Xiaowei could live almost forever. It does not seem far fetched that she would be reprrimanded for hundreds of years for hundred of years of bad deeds.  I am saying this because I feeled in some the demon mythology based on one that says that a creature having cultivated itself and for some acts can gain powers and in the cause of an animal can gain human intelligence and take human for thus a demon. If that demon (supernatural creature) continues to cultivates itself it gains more power and sometimes can become human. A human who has many cultivations can sometimes become divine ( a diety) or the order can change. With what Xiaoyi (Lizard demon) says in Painted Skin, we know that Xiaowei has a 1,000 years cultivated pearl that holds a lot of magic.  So Xiaowei can be atleast a 1,000 years old or have lived hundred of enough years to have gained that much power.  And for that time atleast she has been killing and consuming human hearts when Xiaoyi was not doing it for her.   So the narration in the beginning and Xiaowei's own words do not fit and depict her has a complete victim of others. While some parts of Resurrection and Painted Skin shows us that this is not true.

Demon Hunter (amatuer, never heard his name)

Qu'er (Sparrow Demon)
A second thing that I wanted information on that I feel the movies lacked was what exactly was the demon mythology in this universe. Specially regarding the ice prison.  We are never shown any figure that is shown to be a figure of authority in the demon world that would have been responsible for punishing Xiaowei  by placing her in the ice. This brings me to the question of what exactly is demon nature suppose to be? Xiaowei is said to be punish because she saved a human life, implying that being kind was not part of being a demon.  Also Xiaowei tells Qu'er that she did not really experince pain after the demon hunter's blood touched her and thus could not love. She also lists other things:, can not see the color of the sky, can not smell flowers, cannot have someone die for you. These things are only reserved for humans.  But this is shown not to be true.  If it was how is it that Xiaowei and Qu'er can interact with the world around her if they can smell or see? Specially for Xiaowei who has painted for herself a figure and face that is considered most beautiful in the world. Also she mentions that her scent is resistable and we see this effect on Hou Xin.  So how is Xiaowei able to create the skin she wears that is attractive to human senses. Not only humans but demons too. In the beginning Qu'er is attracted to Xiaowei because of her beautiful face. We see that in both movies Xiaowe is not alone. She has Xiaoyi, who loves her and then Qu'er, who also cares for her.  Both demons spend time finding and getting hearts for Xiaowei and they both die in the end trying to protect her. How is that not them willing to die for her? They both do. Also it's not gurranteed that everyone human has someone who cares enough to die for them, in cases there aren't.

Jing'er & Xiaowei change skins
A third thing I wanted to know more was the juxaposition between the life of a demon and human. When Xiaowei is depicting her life has being pityful. Jing'er, who is a princess her life too is not all great.  Jinger says something along the lines that a creaute whether demon or human is not guaranteed a good life.
So, I wanted more of what it meant to be a demon as suppose to a human illustrated because some of the things Xiaowei mentions is not supported by the movies themselves.

Despite Scars Zhao Wei looks beautiful. Zhou Xun too.
Fourth, something that struck me from beginning to end especially in Resurrection was Xiaowei's desire to be human.  In Painted Skin she never shows any desire to be human it's only when Peirong asks her to stop killing and thus giving her Sheng that she says she would stop eating human hearts and let herself grow old. It was just a bargain she had to make in order to win.  And this comes out to play in Resurrection because although she says she wants humanity, when she is free she goes back to eating human hearts.  Although one can say she does not kill the people herself (particularly in Resurrection where she is never actually shown taking a heart) she knows who does and they do it for her and she profits from it.  Xiaowei also doesn't stop scheming and manipulating. She schemed, which is how Jing'er saved her.  When she arrives at the White City and sees that Jing'er she immediately makes sure that she can used the situation to her advantage by putting a spell ong Hou Xin, so that whether Jing'er face was an issue or not Jinger would need her body to be with Hou Xin. Also in saving Jing'er, she wanted to have the heart.  In Resurrection although she lists the benefit of being human to Qu'er (smelling flowers etc...) to me that was not really why she wanted to be human.  The main reason was to escape the ice prison.  A human does not normally get followed around by an ice prison.  The ice prison seemed to be a manisfestation of Xiaowei's conscience reprimanding her for the schemes, killings, manipulation and selfish acts she comminted and continued to commit even after Qu'er helped free her.

Jing'er gives Xiaowei her heart
Fifth, another thing I wanted to know that the Painted Skin: Resurrection did not address was Jing'er's strong heart, which seemed to be the heart that everyone needed.  Xiaowei does not let Qu'er kill her when they find out she is a woman because Xiaowei felt such strong heat energy from her and she was able to drive away the frost.  Also the shaman for the Wolf Tribe seemed to know that Jing'er's was the heart that they needed to bring back their prince that died because of Xiaowei in the beginning.  Jing'er seemed to be of strong character, but besides that and her being a princess.  Why was her heart so specially.  We know she had 13 other sisters, if it was the need for royal blood.  And of all the woman the Wolf Tribe could have gotten easier excess too. why Jing'er? I mean she refused the marriage and was in love with someone else.  It would have been good to have given the audience something about why Jing'er had a heart that fit all the supernatuaral needs besides leaving it to the Princess/Royal blood default.  Because the shaman could had gotten one of the other 13 princess far easier then Jing'er (it seems).

A blind Hou Xin cuts off the Shaman's frozen arm.
Other things that I thought took away from the movie was the long length of some scene and shortness of others. For example, Jing'er's fall.  We know she was resigned to die, we saw it on her face.  There was no need to draw out the fall because it took away from the impact of it.  When it slowed, I knew immediately she would not die.  But if it happened face and Xiaowei saved her revealing herself, it would have had more impact.  The scene that needed the time was Hou Xin's coming to his senses.  It happens quite fast, while if the scene had been given more time we would see the pain and agony of the realization when things become clearer to him of how much of an idiot he was sometimes.    Now this leads to a scene that some reviews thought was a bit dramatic (I too when I first heard it).  But I see why the scene was done. When Hou Xin cuts his eyes , you might be like (What the hell?). But then like we know and he says he was under Xiaowei's spell (shadow foxes that enter his eyes). So whenever he saw Xiaowei's skin he wanted to be intimate with the body (whether it was really Jing'er or Xiaowei) especially when he caught her scent. Which happens.  So, besides the demon hunter finding a way to remove the shadows the only way they left was when he destroyed his sight.  Only then was his senses back under his control.

Hou Xin
Hou Xin felt short of the two main women and I thought if his character had been worked on more it would have improved the movie. I wanted to more of what was going on inside him.  We know he felt a lot of guilt and responsibility for having let Jing'er get hurt (physically and emotional). So whenever he saw the golden mask it was just proof that he was a failure, could not protect Jing'er really and shouldn't even try.  We see Hou Xin's desire to be with someone especially Jing'er but this gets twisted and turned.
One thing that came across strongly to me while watching both movies was how they wanted us to over look and just feel sorry for Xiaowei especially in Resurrection, to disregarding her painted skin, schemes and seduction.   To me it kind of clear that people, especially men where not attracted to Xiaowei by accident. This seems to be more apperant in Resurrection than in Painted Skin.  Xiaowei's figure and look are not by accident, she created it knowing it would be most attractive to men.  Also the situations she finds herself in for the most part is all planned and setup.  This is especially evident in Resurrection when Jing'er saves her and the men Jing'er fought were created by Xiaowei.  We learn this at the camp fire when she is speaking with Qu'er.  The situation was a set up.  We see this also in Painted Skin, which is not so evident but not only does Sheng dream about Xaoiwei. She also is always there for her to be the first person he sees after he wakes and it is also alluded that Xiaowei may also be resposible for creating or instigating the love making dream Sheng has at the end. Because when he wakes he sees a shadow and when he tries to find the source of it. It leads him to Xiaowei's door, there is the sound of crying which makes him move closer then she opens the door making sure he sees her.

A Frozen Xiaowei

That being said I did feel sorry for Xiaowei and understand her pain, when she felt she should be loved and chosen by Sheng over Peirong a mere human.  I also liked Peirong and felt that she had to face some challenges like in the Painted Skin I felt Peirong was more interesting and went through a wider range of emotions. In Resurrection Xiaowei was good but I felt she was playing the victim to much. making me wonder if she had forgotten whe happened in Painted Skin, but then she was tell Jing'er the story so she remember.  Both Zhou Xun and Zhao Wei were good in there characters in both movies.  In Resurrection when the women switch I could immediately relate, understand and see that Zhao Wei was Xiaowei and she was more believable in making see that she wanted to be human not just to escape from the frost prison but for the things she told Qu'er. Especially when she get Jing'er heart and body wakes feeling the sun on her skin and the smelling the flower. I didn't completely believe Zhou Xun as Xiaowei when she had said she wanted to be human not just to escape the frost, though at other times she was good.  I also like Jing'er better and understood her when Zhao Wei played her as suppose to Zhou Xun. I was not complete drawn in when Zhou Xun was Jing'er. Zhao Wei seemed to convey more emotion even though she has the mask covering some of her face. So I am not sure if I just liked one person's style better or what?

Zhao Wei & Chen Kun (Did not see this scene in the film)

Painted Skin: Resurrection (Hua Pi II)

Painted Skin: Resurrection

Painted Skin: Resurrection/ Painted Skin 2 (Hua Pi II) is the 2012 sequel to Painted Skin (Hua Pi) of 2008.  In this movie three of the original main actors return playing all new characters except Zhou Xun who still plays Xiaowei, the Fox demon.
In this movie Xiaowei escapes from a ice frost prison and then devises a plan to become human. However, in order to do this by an up coming eclipse she needs a human heart that has be given voluntarily.
Xiaowei meets a princess who seems to be the perfect person to allow her to become human.

Painted Skin Resurrection starts with the voice of a male narrator telling us that a Fox Demon(Xiaowei) broke demon law by saving the life of a human man and thus was punished. After about 500 years a bird demon flew over the ice/frost prison and become attracted to the Fox Demon's beautiful face. Thus the bird demon came everyday circling over.  Then the bird plans on the surface of the ice and peaks at it until a crack appears and Xiaowei flies out and is seen running away from the mountain where she was imprisoned then she flows the bird the flies over her.  When then see Xiaowei being carried inside a massive litter with a man. From whom she asks if he would give her everything including his heart. Just then the bird demon, Qu'er(Yang Mi) appears behind the man and rips out his heart. Xiaowei looks out the window and says that an eclipse was approaching and we find out that a demon could become human if a human gave them their heart voluntarily.  Then we are made to see Xiaowei being chased by dark figures. A masked horseman appears and the defeat the men taking Xiaowei away.  As Xiaowei and the horseman ride off we see that the dead men turn in shadowy snakes and disappear.  At the camp fire Xiaowei begins to play her Pipa (Chinese lute) when a drop of water falls from a leaf and turns to frost. And as if, it was alive it creeps up and begins to envelope Xiaowei.  Xiaowei runs behind the mask figure who by their sole presence the frost fades away. Xiaowei tries to seduce the figure, whom she finds out is a woman.  Instead of killing her like Qu'er suggests Xiaowei thinks she can use the woman.  The woman is Princess Jing'er who takes Xiaowei to a border city call the White city. There they meet the soldier Hou Xin that Jing'er loves.  Knowing she can use the situation. Xiaowei possesses Hou Xin's eyes as she dances for the soldiers. From then Hou Xin is uncontrollably attracted to Xiaowei.   Jing'er and Hou Xin are together at the beach remembering the past, when Jing'er had asked if Hou Xin (then her bodyguard) loved her. He does not answer. Jing'er runs off and is attacked by a large bear. The bear strike to her face leaves three large claw marks.  Jing'er from then wear a quarter gold mask to find her scars.  Jing'er confesses to Hou Xin but he replies only that he want to protect the Princess.  Jing'er leaves heart broken and jumps off a cliff into the water where Xiaowei saves her. Revealing that she is a demon.  Qu'er meets a young man, who is descendant of a demon hunter. A drop of his blood burns her and she runs to Xiaowei telling her she knew pain and thus love. Xiaowei says only human can. Xiaowei tells Jing'er that she can help her be with Hou Xin if they trade skin but that Hou Xin will be seeing Xiaowei. The women trade skin.  At the beach, Hou Xin asks Xiaowei why she has Jing'er's dagger and fighting moves. But when he smells her hair, the fox shadows in his eyes turn them black and he makes love to Xiaowei (actually Jing'er).  The golden dagger Jing'er has was the one he used to kill the bear and she had been adding jewels to for the last 8 years since he left her side.   The next day when the woman are back in their own skins, Xiaowei reminds Jing'er that Hou Xin spent the night with her.  Jing'er order's Hou Xin to kill Xiaowei, the demon, but Hou Xin doesn't. She tries to attack Xiaowei but Hou Xin steps in the way.   Soon an envoy arrives saying that Jing'er was to have married into the Wolf Tribe days before but disappeared. Jing'er refuses to go get married saying she is Hou Xin's woman .  The Wolf Tribe then approaches the city threatening to attack.  Hou Xin goes out to face them.  One of his soldier's dies defending him.  Jing'er goes out and tell the Wolf Tribe that she would come for the marriage in 3 days if they left Hou Xin and the City live.  The tribe agrees.  As Xiaowei is playing her pipa she is again enveloped by the frost but Jing'er wraps herself around her driving it away.  Xiaowei tells Jing'er that she loved a man, but is being punished because she saved her lover and his wife.  Xiaowei tells Jing'er that if she gives her, her heart they can exchange skin and she could be with Jing'er(now Xiaowei) but she would have to eat human hearts to maintain her skin and the frost might come when she becomes a demon. Jing'er gives up her skin and the woman exchange skin. Jing'er goes to get married, where she is told that the tribe just needed her heart to bring back their prince who turns out to be the man that died because of Xiaowei in the beginning.  Xiaowei(now Jing'er) goes to an injured Hou Xin and again his eyes turn dark when he catches Xiaowei's scent and they make love, but he asks her why she had no heart beat. Xiaowei runs and can see nothing but people's beating heart. Encounter's the demon hunter(never given a name) but his blood stops her from taking his heart. The demon hunter tells Hou Xin about Xiaowei being Jing'er and vice versa. At first Hou Xin doesn't believe until the demon hunter touches him and the spell on his mind clears and his remembers everything.  He finds Xiaowei who can't bring herself to eat a heart, tells her he always loves her but would forever be bewitched by Xiaowei's skin. He slashes his eyes and the fox shadows leave him.  He takes Xiaowei to go find Jing'er that was about to be killed with the help of Qu'er.  Has they fight the Wolf Tribe shaman Qu'er is destroyed when the shaman slashes her with a sword that hand the demon hunter's blood.  Qu'er turns into a phoenix and brings back birds that destroy the shaman.  Hou Xin asks Jing'er(Xiaowei) to bring Xiaowei(Jing'er) back.  Xiaowei(Jing'er) has completely been turned into a frozen figure. Xiaowei possessing Jing'er body wraps herself around her has the eclipse comes over head.  Both woman are lighted into the skin and become one.  The figure of Xiaowei drops down into Hou Xin's arms then turns back to Jing'er, her scars disappearing.  The demon hunter tells us that if a demon got a voluntarily human heart they would merge into the human and spent it with the human for the rest of their natural life.  The bird form of Qu'er appears near him. The last scene we see Hou Xin and Jing'er riding off together when the scarf flies off his eyes.

Princess Jing'er

Hou Xin

Xiaowei's true form (Different from wormy one of Painted Skin)

Queen of Wolf Tribe and the Shaman

Painted Skin: Resurrection was beautifully shot from the scenes to the costumes.  Although at times the costumes did not all seem to be consistent. I really liked the armors wore by both Jing'er and Hou Xin even the ones from when they were younger. I liked the flowy and dramatic kimonos but at times it did not seem to fit, maybe if it was less culturally distinct, but then Yoshitaka Amano was involved with the design. The make up seemed more evident on Xiaowei but then I think it was intentional to show that she wore a painted skin and we see to scenes were she is painting a face.
The pace seemed a bit slow at times. I felt more was needed for the plot and characterization and development.  I had questions about demon mythology and where some ideas came from.
The acting was all around good, especially the women.  There was a lot of eroticism interlace between Jing'er and Xiaowei.
The story seemed to be created to make the audience feel particularly sorry for Xiaowei.  Although a lot was left vague.  If one did not see Painted Skin, Painted Skin II would be more of the injustice done to Xiaowei but if one saw Painted Skin and paid some attention to some details it puts into questions a lot of what is said about Xiaowei in Painted Skin II.
All in all a good fantasy film, not great but if you are interested in that sort of story.  I would say give it a watch.

I will follow about Painted Skin and Painted Skin II. How they relate, what happened to Xiaowei's character and because she is the only one that is in both beside the actors how the story is then told. Point of view plays quite a role in what we are told about Xiaowei's situation.

Painted Skin (Hua Pi)

Painted Skin (Hua Pi)

Painted skin is a Chinese fantasy film that came out in 2008.  The painted skin is adapted from the Strange Tales of Liaozhai by Pu Songling.
Painted Skin is about a fox-spirit (demon) named Xiaowei (Zhou Xun) you are rescued by Sheng Wang (Chen Kun) from the camp of desert bandits. Immediately, Xiaowei is taken by Sheng Wang's good looks and Martial Arts skills. Sheng Wang and his men bring Xiaowei back to their enclosed city. Sheng Wang and his wife PeiRong (Zhao Wei) take Xiaowei into their household. And from here is where things really start of.

The movie begins with Xiaowei in the tent of the bandit chief and he starts to offer here things at which point she rips his heart out.  At the same time Sheng Wang and his men attack the camp.  Xiaowei starts to scream and Sheng Wang believes her to have been in danger and rescues her.  The men are holly and sing as they return to their city with Xiaowei which many are immediately smitten with. Xiaowei is also taken by Sheng Wang, but we find out that Sheng Wang is married to Peirong.  Xiaowei is taken into the household.
But soon people are being killed by an unknown assailant.  Then Pang Yong (Donnie Yen) who used to led the soldiers returns to town. We find out that Pang Yong was in love with Peirong (maybe still is) and had given her two jade pendants. Telling her to give one to the person she loved.  During that movie there is a flash back where we see Pang Yong fighting bandits in the desert alone and when his soldiers arrive he sees that Sheng Wang is wearing one of the jade pendant.  He gives up his leadership, leaving the army and walks off into the desert.   As Pang Yong drinks with a woman named Xia Bing (Betty Sun) who is a Demon Buster.  Peirong comes to see Pang Yong and tells him she suspected that Xiaowei was not human and probably a demon. Peirong lists a number of strange things she had observed for the three months that Xiaowei had been in town besides the killings. She had tried to tell Sheng Wang who did not believe her and she was aware of how most were smitten with Xiaowei and she did not want to start false accusation.  At this time Sheng Wang starts to dream of Xiaowei and when he woke she would be the first person he saw.
Xia Bing brings up the accusation on Xiaowei but when they look for a demon mark on her. None can be found.  Just before this we found out that their was a lizard demon with Xiaowei that killed the people in town offering Xiaowei their hearts. Xiaowei ate human hearts in order to maintain her human beauty and skin.    Xiaoyi (lizard demon) tells Xiaowei not to waste her time with Sheng Wang, but she says she loved Sheng and would become Mrs. Wang.  The only Mrs.Wang, she would never settle to be his concubine, why should she? At this point many started to see Peirong has the jealous wife.    Peirong apologizes to both Sheng Wang and Xiaowei when the test Xia Bing had fails.  A soldier who also suspected Xiaowei is killed and Pang Yong is suspected.  Peirong is unable to get an answer she believes when she asks Sheng Wang if he will love Xiaowei.  That evening Sheng Wang dreams of making love to Xiaowei, when he wakes he sees a shadow.  He goes to investigate and sees Xiaowei crying.  He tries to comfort her and she tells him she loves him and asks to be with him.  He refuses gently, asks to be the concubine. Could he make love to her she says revealing one shoulder but Sheng put her cloth back on just then Xiaoyi attacks but is about to run off when he sees Xiaowei's angry eyes. Xiaoyi tells Xiaowei that he loves her but she rejects him and tells him to leave. Just then Peirong arrives with some guards looking for Sheng, when Xiaoyi attacks her.  Sheng goes to her aid, but Peirong had seen Sheng and Xiaowei in the room.  Peirong decides that she will tell Xiaowei to be Sheng's concubine.  When Peirong enters Xiaowei's room she sees her taking off the human skin she wore and painted it (hint to title).  Then Xiaowei kills a soldier telling Peirong that anyone who knew would be killed.  Peirong runs off but then comes back asking what Xiaowei wanted.  Xiaowei says to be Sheng's wife. But Peirong could not just disappear because Sheng would look for her. Xiaowei gives Peirong a poison. Peirong asks Xiaowei to stop killing and to stay with Sheng growing old with him.  The poison turns Peirong's hair and skin white making her look like the demon.  The people sees her and she tells them that she was responsible for all the deaths. But before she is killed, Pang Yong saves her. Sheng takes soldiers to go find Peirong.  He asks if she is a demon and she accepts all the blame. Peirong helps Sheng to stab her. At this point Pong stabs Xiaowei showing everyone that she was the real demon.  Xiaowei fights killing all the soldiers.  Then Sheng stabs her with his dagger. Xiaowei becomes white and creating and releasing frost from inside her as she screams.  Sheng tells her to bring Peirong back or he will die. He says he loves Peirong. He says I love you to Xiaowei and stabs himself in the heart.  Xiaowei takes out a spirit pearl to save him but Xiaoyi takes it from her. After Xiaoyi is destroy by Xia Bing's blood.  Xia Bing gives the two spirit pearls to Xiaowei who crushes them and their energy bring back everyone who had died there.  Xiaowei disappears as Sheng opens his eyes.  Pong Yang and Xia Bing leave together to continue fighting bad demon. Sheng anf Peirong are together.  The final scene is of a white fox and lizard standing side by side in the desert.

Xiaoyi, devoted and in love with Xiaowei

So with that what did I like? What did I not like? Some thoughts. The acting was okay for most of the cast but both Peirong and Xiaowei I thought were quite good.  Some reviews I read did not like Pong's humor and I think that is because Pong was attempting to be carefree while he really was not and this came across as fake because it was.  I did not really notice the music while I watched it.  But I felt that the pacing was a bit off at times. A lot seemed to happen even thought the movie is only about 90 minutes long.
Their was really a juxtaposition between the two women.  Xiaowei was adored by almost all.  She was seen has exciting and charming (Sheng says thus). And at times I felt like the movie being more around Xiaowei portrayed that the love she would have with Sheng would be more exciting.  Having read some other reviews I felt that some wanted that romance more. Be also some seemed to not see that Xiaowei was a seductress.  She got more skin baring scenes. And she knew how to manipulate people emotion especially the men.  Xiaowei had created (painted) herself a skin that was perfect and would be even more beautiful than any humans.  Which she used to get the hearts she needed to maintain it.  To me Xiaowei seemed obsessed and infatuated (although these can be seen or interpreted as love. I don't think it completely is)with Sheng among many thing being his beauty, strength, kindness and that he resisted her many times.
Peirong I felt was played beautifully because there were times I felt she was being made out to be the annoying wife that was in the way and could be annoying. However she was never thus.  Peirong tries to protect Sheng and everyone who knew her longer but fell for Xiaowei's beauty.  Peirong cared and welcomed Xiaowei at the beginning until she knew she was a demon.  Even in the end in a way she still cared for her enough to want her to stop killing and to be with Sheng, whom she knew would take care of Xiaowei.   I felt Peirong went through more range of emotions and experiences then the other characters.
One thing I noticed was that Xiaowei may not have been truely in love with Sheng. From what I saw I thought she was infatuate and attracted to Sheng for many reason. Sheng was a good looking man, great fighter and soldier, he literally swiped Xiaowei off her feet and he resisted her allure and seduction. Xiaowei seemed to be someone who always got what she wanted but here she did not get what she wanted and nothing she did worked.  Sheng, I think was attracted physically to Xiaowei like many men, but he also cared about her like a sister and felt responsible for her. So, a scene in the end confused me because up to then he said and showed that he loved Peirong and wanted her back, wanted her alive.  But when he was on his knees he says "I love you, but married the wrong person".  In most western countries people say "I love you" a lot to friends, family and lovers, but each them meaning it differently. From what I have observed (knowing very little of Chinese culture and Asia in general) people usually say "I love you" to a lover but express their feeling to friends and family in a different (ex. I care about you etc...). So I did not understand why he said that or why they wrote that unless he wanted to make sure that Xiaowei would bring Peirong back because he said that.  Although, it seems possible to be in love with two people.  It did not seemed to me that Sheng would have abandoned Peirong even if he also loved Xiaowei.

That being said, Painted Skin was a good fantasy movie.  Not the greatest and more could have improved it but I did not feel has if it wasted potential. Although there more to be had.

Bloody Sky

I have been spending some time on Tumblr lately. Yesterday, came across this first picture of what seems to be a Cherry Blossom field in bloom.  The I saw the picture of the hanging red leaves and then the spider lily picture.  For some reason these images reminded me of a nightmare turned walking dream that I had as a child of a bleeding sky.

These images make me image what things, might have been changed into when soaked by the red rain of the bleeding clouds.

I really like this illustration of a bloody Spider Lily.
